How to find To-ji Pagoda

South of Kyoto Station rises the five-story pagoda of To-ji — the tallest wooden tower in Japan, watching over the city for 1,200 years. Catching it from the train window is the perfect announcement: you have arrived in Kyoto.

If you are traveling from Tokyo toward Shin-Osaka, start watching the Seat A · sea side window as you approach Kyoto Sta.. If you are traveling toward Tokyo, the order is reversed.

Why this view matters

To-ji Pagoda is one of the window views that make the Tokaido Shinkansen more than a transfer. The train moves fast, so visibility depends on weather, seat position, and timing.
